What was the big idea?

To improve the environment by replanting large empty beds and to involve the local residents, encouraging ownership and pride in their community.

Where did it come from?

Residents were dissatisfied with the environment and the Neighbourhood Tenant Participation Officer saw the opportunity to involve them in making the improvements they sought.

What did we do?

Large overgrown bushes had been removed by Culture and Leisure Services, leaving large empty beds. Each bed was rotavated and had compost added.

We delivered a plant pot to each household with an invitation inside to attend the festival and bring along their plant pot.

On the day, we provided information about the estate and KNH, face painting, and a warm lunch. Residents brought their pots, planted them with flowers donated by Culture and Leisure and then got to work on planting the large beds.

How have things improved?

  • Residents are very pleased with the way the beds now improve the look and feel of their estate.
  • They have now formed their own Tenants and Residents Group and are planning further activities involving the children.
  • The Estate Management Officer now has a range of people to work with on the estate plan.

What have we learned?

  • Residents will support local events if it is relevant to their concerns and they have been briefed beforehand - the plant pot on the doorstep with an invitation worked well.
  • We have an effective partnership with Culture and Leisure with a shared agenda of environmental improvements with community engagement.

Looking ahead

We are supporting the new Tenants and Residents Association to develop a range of activities with the children on the estate and hope to develop the partnership with Culture and Leisure on other estates where this kind of improvement is a priority for residents.
