Achieving excellence in governance

How we do it
In our 2005 "three star" ALMO inspection, governance received some very positive comments.
"KNH has a clear competency framework for board members. Relationships with the executive
team, board members and customers are developed to achieve high levels of effectiveness"
Our approach to excellence in governance is about leadership and vision from the board and senior management
team. Board members are clear about their roles, about the values and mission of the company and about our key
priorities.
In order to strive for and achieve excellence for our own board, we carry out skills audits with board members
and draw up an excellence framework to form a set of competencies. This is for both board members and senior
managers and includes:
- personal effectiveness
- setting business direction
- holding to account
- chairing meetings
- communication
- strategic thinking
- developing people and teams
- responding to diverse needs
- ensuring value for money.
Who does it
Our Director of Business Development and Company Secretary heads up KNH's governance support together with
KNH board members. The approach outlined above is offered as part of a governance support package to other
organisations.
KNH is experienced at providing governance review, support and mentoring to others. We have worked with two
ALMOs to provide one to one mentoring between board members.
