Bill and Jackie Baxter, winners of the 2009 gardening competition, with KNH board member Terry Goodall and KNH Excel Manager, Helen O'Sullivan

The competition is open to Council tenants and leaseholders and aims to recognise the contribution that people who take pride in their gardens make to their local communities.

An independent panel, headed up once again by local gardening expert Graham Porter, will judge winners from north and south Kirklees, as well as choose an overall winner for the Borough. Graham is the gardening correspondent for the Huddersfield Examiner and Radio Leeds and has worked in horticulture for over 40 years.

The categories are:

• Best garden (houses and bungalows) – for anyone whose flowers and shrubs are a joy to behold.
• Most improved garden – ideal for those whose gardens are a ‘work in progress.’
• Best communal garden – aimed at those neighbours who work together to brighten up their homes.
• Best balcony/patio garden – perfect for those with limited space.

All category winners will receive £50 in gardening vouchers. The overall winner will receive £100 in vouchers.

Paul Buckley, KNH’s Director of Neighbourhoods, said: “Many of our tenants work very hard in their gardens and their efforts deserve to be recognised – their gardens bring pleasure to their neighbours and help make sure their estates are attractive places to live.

“This competition is our chance to thank them for their efforts and to encourage others to start taking pride in their gardens.”

People can enter their own gardens or they can nominate a neighbour’s for an award. Application forms are in the May edition of Door to Door magazine. Alternatively, anyone interested in applying can ring the KNH Excel team on 01484 223246.

The deadline for entries is June 11. Judging will take place in early July.

The competition is part of KNH Excel, an incentive scheme that rewards and recognises good tenants and encourages others who might have rent arrears to clear their accounts. Other Excel benefits include an award-winning discount card, regular competitions and prize draws, community grants of up to £500 and good neighbour awards.
