Release Date: 24-Sep-2015
Tenants in our retirement living schemes have been patiently nurturing sunflowers all summer, as part of an activity designed to bring the enjoyable benefits of gardening to older people and get them involved in a bit of healthy competition.
Andrew & Ruth from the Plant it project with the winning Brooklands team
Scheme coordinator Linda with Joan and her winning sunflower
In all, 54 people took part in the competition, which began in the spring. Everyone was given dwarf sunflower seedlings and advice on how to get the best results from our Plant it, Grow it, Eat it team. Before planting, they all decorated their plant pots so they could tell them apart.
The gentle rivalry has been a regular topic of conversation in the schemes and the source of friendly banter, as they all tried to out-do each other with their blooms. Even when the fickle flowers failed to thrive, people found creative ways to stay involved.
The entries have just been judged, and the winners are:
Tallest sunflower (4ft 2ins) – Joan Shaw, Syke Fold Grange, Cleckheaton
Best floral display, Roundway, Honley
Best team effort – Brooklands, Bradley
Healthiest plants - Belmont Grange, Norristhorpe
Most creative effort - Oxford Grange, Gomersal
Best nurtured – Brooklyn Grange, Cleckheaton
Well done to everyone who took part!
