Elsie has lived in her current home for 40 years, Before that, she, her husband and three sons lived in a one-up, one-down cottage in Shelley and then moved to very basic living quarters at Great Northern Street Church, where her husband used to be the caretaker.

However, when her husband became too ill to do his job, the family had to move, and were offered a council home.

The best thing about the new house, she says, were the space and the facilities: “I was over the moon to get somewhere with room for us all, plus our own kitchen and bathroom – we’d only had a tin bath before we moved.”

During her 40-year tenancy, Elsie played an active role in the local tenants and residents’ association and often accompanied housing staff on estate inspections. She has seen many changes in her area through the years, the biggest being the traffic: “the road is always so busy now, but when I first moved here, there were hardly any cars and it was so easy to cross the road safely.”

Although Elsie was sadly widowed 25 years ago, her family has flourished, with the addition of eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, who will all celebrating her birthday with her on Monday.

KNH Estate Management Officer, Anne Mallinson, said: “Elsie is a wonderful lady, a fantastic customer, and everyone in the local housing team wishes her a very happy birthday.”
