Mike Yip from Thongsbridge took the top prize in the competition, as well as the award for most improved garden.

Malaysian-born Mike began his Eastern-themed garden three years ago as an outlet for his artistic talents and, he says, “a way to unwind from the stresses of everyday life.”

His garden incorporates the elements of Feng Shui to ensure that the plants, colours and textures are balanced; all of the structures are made out of recycled materials.

The results of Mike’s labour delighted the judges, who were overwhelmed by the time and effort that he had obviously invested in his creation.

Gardening expert, Graham Porter, who headed up the judging panel, said: “Mike has created an absolutely stunning garden in every detail.

“It not only looks amazing, but it’s also beautifully scented and stimulates all the senses.”

The award for best garden (house or bungalow) went to Rose Day of Glenfield Avenue, Deighton. The judges praised her “fabulous” garden for its range of plants and thoughtful planning.

Rose said, “I’m overwhelmed. I can’t believe I’ve won my category!”

Mavis Shaw and Reginald Pope accepted the award for best communal garden on behalf of the Deercroft Tenants & Residents Association in Salendine Nook.

Several residents from the flats work on the garden for the benefit of everyone who lives there. Mrs Shaw and Mr Pope constantly add to the garden and are always on the look out for bargain plants at markets and garden centres.

The best balcony or patio award went to Patricia Nettleton of Eastlands, Almondbury. She is passionate about her balcony and spends a lot of time sitting out, enjoying the flowers and the views.

Category winners each received a gardening book and £50 in gardening vouchers.
