Release Date: 07-Jun-2012
Tenants and residents living in the Brighton Street area of Heckmondwike had two reasons to celebrate this week, with the official opening of their refurbished community centre and the Diamond Jubilee.
With help from KNH, the Brighton Street tenants and residents assocation (TRA) organised a celebration event for the whole community.
Celebrating the Jubilee at Brighton Street
People of all ages joined in various Jubilee-themed activities throughout the day, including balloon modelling, face painting, henna art and craft making. Chloe Hadfield and Ellie Abbott won the children’s crown-making competition and received their prizes from ward councillor, Viv Kendrick.
The community centre, which is used by a number of community groups, mainly for older people, has recently been refurbished with funding from KNH and the Spen Valley Area Committee.
The centre has been extensively improved, with new heating and a new kitchen, rewiring, plastering and decorating. The fire alarm system has also been replaced, as has the furniture and flooring.
Local people were involved in the redesign and are thrilled with the result, which is a much lighter, fresher more welcoming building.
According to Jackie Briggs, Secretary of the Brighton Street TRA, one of the groups which uses the centre, “it was great to see the community centre full of people all enjoying themselves.”
Carol Crossley, KNH’s Older People’s Support Manager, agreed, saying, “The community centre is looking really good and is a fantastic local resource. I hope people will continue to use it throughout the year.”
A number of regular activities are held at Brighton Street each week. If you are interested in taking part, please contact KNH on 01484 221723.
