What asbestos is

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material, its fibres are strong and heat resistant which led to its use in a wide range of building materials commonly used in the construction of houses and buildings since the early 1900s.

Don't worry though, materials containing asbestos are not dangerous if properly segregated and maintained in a good condition.

When it is dangerous

When it is damaged or disturbed by being sanded, scrubbed, drilled or sawn, it can become potentially harmful to health as it can release harmful fibres into the air.

Exposure to these fibres at a low level is unlikely to harm your health but exposure to a lot of asbestos fibres can lead to respiratory problems that can be harmful.
